CHAPTER EIGHT
The rain started shortly after she got home. It wasnât a storm, just a steady patter on the roof and windows. She had stopped at the grocery store on her way back, and now she dropped the groceries off in the kitchen along with her bag from the hardware store before going back outside to move the riding lawnmower into the shed so it didnât get wet. She still didnât quite trust the shed, which looked like it might fall down if someone looked at it funny, but Grady had said it was safe enough for now, and she trusted him. The floor was dirt, and the mower kicked up dust as she rolled it inside and turned it off. Something about the murky, cobweb-filled interior of the shed always left her feeling uncomfortable. She tried to brush it off, telling herself there was no one else out here, no one but her and, a quarter mile down the road, Beth and Tim York, her kindly if sometimes frustrating neighbors. She was alone on her property and had nothing to worry about other than the spiders.
After the recurring issues with the trespasser, that attempt at self-reassurance fell flat. She tucked the mower keys into her pocket and hurried out of the shed, glancing toward the tree line as she half jogged through the rain back to her house. She didnât see anyone out there, and the trespasser had only ever come during the night, but the knowledge that someone could be out there made her uncomfortable. She was really, really glad she had those security cameras. Between those and the promise from Officer Hendricks that someone would be driving by in a squad car, she should be safe.
It was still only early afternoon, so after she put away the groceries, she took out her laptop and rewatched an instructional video about removing wallpaper. The wallpaper in the entry hall might have been pretty once, but now the floral design was faded and yellowing, and it was peeling at the seams. It needed to go, so she changed into something she wouldnât mind getting dirty, put on some music, and got to work.
It wasnât an unpleasant job, exactly. It smelled nice, since the video she had watched instructed her to use a mixture of liquid fabric softener and warm water to soak the wallpaper before she removed it with a putty knife. It was still hard work, and her arms got tired more quickly than she liked.
She managed to get half the hall done before she had to call it a day and start on dinner. She took a quick shower and put on something nicer, then went into the kitchen to start the food. She was a very average cook, but she could follow a recipe, and was following a new one for spaghetti with giant meatballs. She would also make a fresh salad, and she had a tub of premade cookie dough so she could make chocolate chip cookies for dessert.
